Course Overview

Welcome to the Tenant Resource & Advisory Centre’s (TRAC) online course, Renting It Right – Tenant- Landlord Law in BC. This intermediate-level course offers a comprehensive overview of tenants’ and landlords’ rights and responsibilities, to help you maintain a stable and problem-free tenancy.

Since 1984, TRAC has been a provincial leader in tenant education and advocacy. In addition to our series of Renting It Right courses, TRAC provides BC tenants with free legal representation, phone assistance, educational workshops, and plain language publications. Renting It Right – Tenant- Landlord Law in BC consists of seven modules: 

  • Peace and Privacy
  • Paying Rent
  • Repairs and Services
  • Effective Communication
  • Ending a Tenancy
  • Eviction
  • Moving Out

If you have registered for this course, you will be asked to take a short quiz at the end of each Module. Registered students who view at least 90% of the overall course, and receive at least 80% on each quiz, will be provided with a certificate of completion.

 
Learning Objectives
After successfully completing Tenant-Landlord Law in BC, you should be able to understand:
the definition of “quiet enjoyment” – the legal principle that gives tenants the right to peace and privacy in their rental unit;
the rules about payment of rent, including how a landlord can raise a tenant’s rent;
tenants’ and landlords’ legal responsibilities to repair, maintain, and clean rental properties;
some basic tips on how to communicate effectively with a landlord – both verbally and in writing;
the rules about how a tenant can legally end a tenancy, and the consequences for “breaking a lease”;
the different ways a landlord can try to evict a tenant, and how a tenant can challenge an eviction notice; and
tenants’ and landlords’ legal responsibilities at the end of a tenancy, including the rules regarding the return of a security and/or pet damage deposit.
