Course Overview

Welcome to the Tenant Resource & Advisory Centre’s (TRAC) online course, Renting It Right – Finding a Home. This introductory-level course offers practical tips and legal information that will help you search for rental housing and safely sign a tenancy agreement.

Since 1984, TRAC has been a provincial leader in tenant education and advocacy. In addition to its series of Renting It Right courses, TRAC provides BC tenants with free legal representation, phone assistance, educational workshops, and plain language publications. Visit tenants.bc.ca to learn more about TRAC’s programs and services.

Renting It Right – Finding a Home consists of five modules:

  • The Law in BC
  • Searching for Housing
  • Rental Applications
  • Tenancy Agreements
  • Moving In

If you have registered for this course, you will be asked to take a short quiz at the end of each Module. Registered students who view at least 90% of the overall course, and receive at least 80% on each quiz, will be provided with a certificate of completion.

Learning Objectives

how a tenant can focus their search for rental housing and get the most out of a viewing;
the most common factors that landlords consider when assessing a rental application, as well as some important rules that landlords must follow when looking for a new tenant;
the key legal terms and concepts that can help a tenant safely sign a tenancy agreement that best suits their needs and interests; and
the most important legal responsibilities that tenants and landlords should follow at the start of a tenancy – just before or shortly after the tenant moves in.
